We would like to use Warmboard-R in our upcoming reno but we are concerned about whether the chosen engineered hardwood floor will be damaged where we have area rugs.

Damage to hardwood (wide plank or engineered) generally occurs due to a combination of high water temperatures and uneven floor temperatures, or “striping”.

Here’s a side-by-side video showing 2 system heating up – the striping is very evident in the product on the left.

As you are aware, Warmboard is coated with thick aluminum. This ensures the heat is distributed quickly from the water in the tube, ensuring you get more comfortable more quickly. But it also means lower water temperatures AND more even surface temperatures. That combination ensures a safe environment for any flooring – including engineered hardwood with thick rugs.

Take a look at our installation manualPage 18 has a list of over 40 hardwood manufacturers and their recommendations with Warmboard.

One last note – the vast majority of the projects we are involved in use hardwood. And we rarely hear complaints. By ensuring the hardwood is acclimated and installed correctly, and reasonable water temperatures are running through the system, you’ll be fine.
