An event at the Philadelphia Navy Yard is expected to promote energy-efficient technologies. The Citizens Voice reports that the modular home construction company Simplex Industries from Scranton is demonstrating the energy savings homeowners can achieve by investing in new residential building options. This is all part of the Energy Efficient Buildings Hub, an initiative that started in 2011 with a $122 million grant to Penn State University from the Department of Energy, a $30 million grant from the state and an additional $7 million from other federal sources.
"This is the future of home building," David Boniello, vice president of marketing and development at Simplex, told the news source. "This gets you into the next tier of understanding the building sciences."
The purpose of the event is to promote the reduction of energy use in constructing residential and commercial buildings. The center located at the Navy Yard aims to reduce energy consumption in commercial buildings located in the local region by 20 percent in the next eight years. As a result, many of the buildings on display rely on a variety of energy-efficient technologies, according to the news source.
One of the more popular solutions included in structure options is radiant floor heating. The HVAC solution is much more energy efficient than traditional utility options like base board heating, radiators or vents. Because a radiant floor heating system can produce warmth more effectively than other options, the thermostat for a building can be set at a lower temperature without anyone the wiser. The comfort and warmth an individual will feel in a space warmed with radiant floor heating is so superior that a property owner will benefit from lower utility bills and greater comfort.
