About Terry Alsberg

Terry Alsberg started at the University of Illinois as an Engineering Physics major but switched to Architecture with an engineering emphasis. He was founder and CEO of Alsberg Brothers Boatworks. He was also founder and a principal at Alsberg Design, an architectural firm specializing in residential design.

He first became familiar with radiant heat when several of his clients asked for it. Motivated in part by having two children with asthma, he invented Warmboard in 1992 as a low-mass, radiant heating solution for the remodel of his own home. He filed a patent on the technology in 1994 and licensed that patent to Jeld-Wen in 1996. Warmboard Inc. was spun out as an independent entity in 2002 with Terry as CEO.

Since 2002, over 20 million square feet of Warmboard has been installed throughout North America, with installations not only in the United States but also in Europe, Japan and Antarctica. Warmboard was selected as one of the Top Ten Green Building Products by Sustainable Industries in 2007 and won a GREEN LOG Home & Lifestyle Award in 2008.

Warmboard has also earned nationwide recognition as part of the University of Colorado’s entry in the Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon. In 2003 and 2005 the University of Colorado was the only university with Warmboard in its entry and it won both years. In 2007 five universities, including MIT, selected Warmboard for their entries. The top US entry, University of Maryland, continued Warmboard’s winning streak, and even scored a perfect 100 in the Energy Balance contest!

This year brings the Department of Energy’s 2009 Solar Decathlon and, once again, Warmboard has been chosen by many universities. What do the best universities know about energy efficiency and Warmboard that you should know?
