With the USCBC GreenBuild Conference and Expo taking place next week in San Francisco (Nov 14-16) we thought this would be an appropriate time to share what makes radiant flooring so green and such a smart home heating solution. We’ll also explain why Warmboard radiant products have been green since their inception.
All radiant floor heating is considered sustainable because it is healthy and provides clean indoor air quality. The heat from radiant flooring emanates through the floor so there are no allergens and dust particles being blown around the room as there are with forced air systems. Clean IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) can reduce allergies, medical bills, incidences of asthma and more. European studies indicate that dust mite populations are reduced as much as 90% in radiant heated homes.
Radiant heated flooring is also green because it is more efficient than forced air heating, for multiple reasons. A typical radiant heated home in the United States can expect a 25% energy savings over a conventional forced air home (the 25% figure comes from a 1998 study by Kansas State University and the American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers [ASHRAE]). And a Warmboard system can create significant savings beyond that.
Warmboard radiant panels have multiple sustainable facets. For example, Warmboard’s unique patented design and utility make its panels the most energy efficient in the marketplace, allowing a Warmboard radiant system to comfortably warm any home at the lowest water temperatures in the industry.
These lower water temperatures translate to lower energy consumption of natural gas, propane, or electricity. The low water temperatures also easily interface with solar thermal and geothermal technologies. The combination of these two components creates a more efficient, money saving, comfortable place to live.
Warmboard radiant floor heating also has the ability to zone a home to the needs and preferences of the homeowner. A home can be designed with any number of zones, so common areas of the home (family room, kitchen, dining room) can be controlled with one thermostat whereas areas of the home that are used less frequently (bedrooms) can be zoned and controlled by a separate thermostat. This makes the system extremely efficient by having the ability to precisely control where and when areas in the home are receiving heat and allows less energy to be used. Warmboard doesn’t like waste! Warmboard’s customized CAD design services fit the panels into each unique home design. Therefore, there is little waste when it comes to product purchase, development, and shipment; the exact amount of panels needed to cover a project are the exact amounts shipped to a particular job site. This customization allows for a large reduction in product and material waste as well as a reduction on the environmental impact in creating and transporting such materials.
Also, as an APA-approved structural subfloor, Warmboard panels are the radiant heating system combined with the structural subfloor. Once Warmboard is installed the building has subfloor in place along with a highly conductive radiant panel in which to install the tubing. This eliminates labor and materials, reducing the waste a project might produce from the subfloor and radiant flooring panel being separate and independent products.
Radiant flooring can also contribute to the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Homes green building rating program. A Warmboard radiant floor heating system can potentially generate up to 15 LEED points! The LEED program is transforming the way built environments are designed, constructed, and operated and radiant floor heating is an integral system that contributes to any home’s health, efficiency and overall comfort.
